Janet Kohler received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi and her MFA from Eastern Michigan University. She currently teaches numerous workshops in Pastel & Landscape Painting at the Visual Arts Association of Livonia and at Interlochen College of Creative Arts, Interlochen, MI. She has taught figure drawing and painting, color mixing with pastels and plein-air painting classes at the Ann Arbor Art Center, drawing at Washtenaw Community College, Drawing the Figure workshops at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and pastel painting workshops at Crooked Tree Art Center, Petoskey, MI, Jackson Civic Art Association, and the Art School at Old Church, Demarest, NJ.
Janet’s pastels and oils have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are included in many corporate and private collections. She was one of three plein air artists to be invited for the first “en Plein Air” exhibit at Studio 23, June 3-July 8, 2016 in conjunction with the Great Lakes Bay En Plein-Air Competition. She’s received many honors and awards including the First Place at the “Quick Paint”, June 2015 at the Great Lakes Bay En Plein Air competition in Saginaw and the First Place for the Quick Draw in 2013 & 2014 at the Dexter Plein Air Festival. She also received First Place and People’s Choice Award at the 6th Annual Key West Paint-out. Janet’s pastel painting “Tranquility” was published in the series of drawing books: Stroke of Genius 6-The Best of Drawing - Values, Lights & Darks. Her figure drawing was published earlier in Stroke of Genius 3-Fresh Perspectives, The Best of Drawing. Janet exhibits locally with the Ann Arbor Area Pastelists, Ann Arbor Women Artists and is the Secretary for the Great Lakes Pastel Society, a member of the Pastel Society of America, Michigan Plein Air Painters, and Ann Arbor Women Artists.
